In 1845, while Istanbul was struggling with epidemics, a philanthropist changed the course of the history. Bezmialem Valide Sultan established the first modern hospital in Turkish history. The most advanced medical care of the time was provided to those in need, free of charge. Philanthropic principles of Bezmialem Valide Sultan continue under the roof of Bezmialem Vakif University (BVU) which was founded in 2010 and it still carries this historical signet with pride. We transformed the first modern hospital of our history into a health sciences university that gives education to about 3.500 students and provides clinical services to 8000 patients daily with its two main hospitals and two outpatient clinics on each side of Istanbul.
Bezmialem Vakif University promising a high quality education with a mosaic campus life is rapidly progressing to become one of the leading universities. High level of commitment to education, scientific research, and delivery of health care services are of utmost importance. In our university hospitals, we provide our students with the most comprehensive handson training. Our faculty provide international level of training and education. A number of our programmes has already been accredited nationally or internationally. BVU is one of the first thematic research universities in Health and Life Sciences in Turkey and also a non-profit foundation university which aims to make progress in education, research and health care. BVU keeps these aspirations more than 175-year old heritage alive and aims to be a reference institution at worldwide level with its 4 Schools: Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy as well as 6 departments: Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, Nursing, Audiology, Health Management, Occupational Theraphy and Nutrition & Dietetics departments under the School of Health Sciences. We have 3 Graduate Schools: Institute of Health Sciences, Life Sciences and Biotechnology, and Gastroenterology and also a Vocational School of Health Services, with its 14 two-year programs. BVU has mainly 4 campuses, a Phytotherapy Center, Complementary Medicine Research Center and 2 Institutes located at the very centre of each side of Istanbul. The Phytoherapy Center is the first center approved by YÖK (Council of Higher Education) (2014) in research and education. Institute of Life Sciences and Biotechnology was established in 2018 with state-of-art research laboratories in a fully renovated historical site supported by Turkish Ministry of Industry and Technology. We do believe that students must have an international experience before they graduate to prepare them for their future career. Therefore, we aim to achieve our internationalization strategies by using the fostering power of Erasmus and other exchange programs. We attach great importance to the international cooperations. Our university has more than 100 collaborations from all the world including Johns Hopkins University, USA which is among the leading top-notch universities in the field of health and education.
